Weekly Spartan Fact

Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars.[2] Between 431 and 404 BC, Sparta was the principal enemy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War,[3] from which it emerged victorious, though at great cost of lives lost. Sparta's defeat by Thebes in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC ended Sparta's prominent role in Greece. However, it maintained its political independence until the Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC. It then underwent a long period of decline, especially in the Middle Ages, when many Spartans moved to live in Mystras. Modern Sparta is the capital of the Greek regional unit of Laconia and a center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives.

Here are three deleted scenes that were too furious for Mad Max: Fury Road

After a long winding tour through summer theaters, Mad Max: Fury Road is finally ready to roar in to living rooms, and you know what that means: bonus features.
Those features include these three deleted scenes from the movie, featuring more of our heroes on the War Rig, our villains on the hunt and the huddled masses before the Citadel, scraping for whatever they can.
Fury Road is already available to download, with a physical home media release coming up on Sept. 1.

This Is How Benedict Cumberbatch Became A Dragon in ‘The Hobbit’ [Video]

How do you prepare to portray the father of all contemporary fantasy dragons? For Benedict Cumberbatch, getting into character as The Hobbit’s fire-breathing nemesis Smaug involved sticking white dots all over his face and rolling around on the floor in a motion-capture suit. That may sound more like playtime than performing, but as this just-released clip (above) from a behind-the-scenes featurette on the extended edition DVD and Blu-ray of The Desolation of Smaug (in stores on November 3) makes clear, it was an instrumental part of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic dragon to life for Peter Jackson’s three-installment adaptation of the author’s 1937 novel.
Jackson is no stranger to mo-cap, of course, having made great advances in the technology with The Lord of the Ringstrilogy, where Andy Serkis’s Gollum stole the show. Cumberbatch, on the other hand, didn’t have any prior experience with the process, but he encouraged the director to pursue that route — over traditional animation — for Smaug. Speaking with Screen Slam last year, the Sherlock star remembers telling Jackson: “I’m really keen on doing motion capture, because I think it’s got to be embodied. I don’t want to just do something to animation, and do something in a blind spot, and not really know how it’s going to manifest. I want to lead a little bit of the creative process. [to give] the physicality around the voice.”

Adventure Time and Mad Max: Fury Road are a match made in Valhalla

Imagine a world gone mad after a nuclear holocaust. The landscape is utterly changed, littered with the ruins of an older civilization. An old man sits upon a throne in the mountains, stealing women and making them his wives. And a lone adventurer rides through this wasteland not for justice but to survive. That's a very basic summary of Mad Max: Fury Road's premise, but it's amazing how well it applies to Adventure Time, one of the most beloved cartoons of our era.
Inspired by artist Ryan May's stunning fanart, Egor Zhgun's MADVENTURE TIME takes the characters from the Land of Ooo and plants them in George Miller's hellscape. Finn the Human is now Mad Finn, with Jake taking the role of trusty V8 Interceptor. Ice King is now Immortan Simon, the ruler of this world, leader of the War Lemons, and "husband" to the world's princesses. And it's up to Imperator Bubblegum and Mad Finn to save the day before Simon destroys them.
Is it a perfect fit? Not exactly! (For one thing, where's the Lich in all this?) But it's incredible how well the two properties work. You might say it's shiny and mathematical!
