Iconic Star Wars Actress Carrie Fisher Dies at 60: '

Carrie Fisher, the actress best known as Star Wars‘ Princess Leia Organa, has died after suffering a heart attack. She was 60.
Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement to PEOPLE on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd:
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” reads the statement.

“She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly,” says Lourd, 24. “Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 23, when she went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics removed her from the flight and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for a heart attack. She later died in the hospital.
The daughter of renowned entertainers Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Fisher was brought up in the sometimes tumultuous world of film, theater and television.
Escaping Hollywood in 1973, the star enrolled in the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she spent over a year studying acting.

Just two years later, though, the bright lights of Hollywood drew her back, and Fisher made her film debut in the Warren Beatty-led Shampoo.
Her role in Star Wars would follow in 1977 – and she detailed the experience, including her on-set affair with costar Harrison Ford, in her  latest memoirThe Princess Diarist. She was only 19 when the first installment of the beloved sci-fi franchise was filmed.

In addition to the second and third Star Wars films – and last year’s The Force Awakens – Fisher starred in 1980’s The Blues BrothersThe Man with One Red Shoe, Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and, later, When Harry Met Sally.

Fisher wed musician Paul Simon in 1983. It was an explosive marriage, according to Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon author Peter Ames Carlin, and was cut short by swinging stages of depression, the actress’s drug use and an array of personal insecurities. The relationship continued, though, on-and-off for several years after the pair divorced in 1984.

Fisher was candid about her substance abuse issues over the decades, starting at only age 13 when she began smoking marijuana. She said she later dabbled in drugs like cocaine and LSD. Fisher explored her own issues with addiction in her 1987 bestselling, semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge, which was later turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep.
“I never could take alcohol. I always said I was allergic to alcohol, and that’s actually a definition to alcoholism — an allergy of the body and an obsession of the mind,” Fisher told the Herald-Tribune in 2013. “So I didn’t do other kinds of drugs until I was about 20. Then, by the time I was 21 it was LSD. I didn’t love cocaine, but I wanted to feel any way other than the way I did, so I’d do anything.”
In 1985, Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and she subsequently became an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness.
Throughout much of the ’90s, Fisher focused on her writing career, publishing Surrender the Pink and Delusions of Grandma. In addition, Fisher helped craft the scripts for numerous Hollywood films, going uncredited, for films like The Wedding SingerHook and Sister Act.
Billie Lourd, Fisher’s only child, was born in July 1992. The Scream Queens star’s father, talent agent Bryan Lourd, dated Fisher for three years and is now married to Bruce Bozzi.

In 2005, Fisher was recognized with the Women of Vision Award by the Women in Film & Video – DC. Three years later, Fisher’s Wishful Drinking autobiography was turned into a one-woman stage show and eventually an HBO documentary.

Of returning to the role that launched her career – Leia – for The Force Awakens, Fisher told PEOPLE in 2015, “I knew that something enormous was likely going to impact my life from this film and that there was absolutely no way of understanding what that was or was likely to be.”

The film – which brought Fisher back into the spotlight – earned  her a nomination for the 2016 Saturn Award for best supporting actress. She had already filmed scenes for the next Star Wars installment, Episode VIII, due out in December 2017.
Just last month, Fisher also revealed her surprising on-set affair with Star Wars costar Harrison Ford in The Princess Diarist, telling PEOPLE of the three-month fling during the making of the 1977 movie, “It was so intense.” The memoir, which drew from Fisher’s old diaries and notebooks, brought up mixed feelings for the actress.
“I had forgotten that I’d written them, and I’ve never written diaries sort of like that,” she said. “I write when I’m upset … it was about two or three months of upset.”
Fisher added, “It was sad because I was so insecure, and it’s very raw and obviously I didn’t expect anyone — including myself, I suppose later on — to read it.”
She is survived by her mom Reynolds, daughter Lourd, brother Todd Fisher, half-sisters Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher, and beloved French bulldog, Gary.

Kanye West "Fade" Music Video

Kanye West used his four-minute blank slate at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards to — what else? — speak his mind, delivering an oratory about violence in Chicago, creative thought leaders, and his usual list of heroes. With expectations set high, it leaves fans wondering what’s next up for the group who just can’t seem to escape flesh-eating “walkers.” Season 7 of The Walking Dead is expected to premiere on October 23.

'The Woods' Is Actually a Surprise 'Blair Witch' Sequel

Earlier this year, the trailer for Adam Wingard’s upcoming movie The Woods hinted at a found footage film promising to be equally suspenseful as V/H/S and The Guest. While little was given about the plot aside from a group of college kids going camping, it’s now been revealed that the movie is actually a sequel to the 1999 filmThe Blair Witch Project. During Comic-Con, a screening was billed under The Woods shortly before unveiling the true title of the film, which will simply be called Blair Witch. In an interview with EW, Lionsgate executive Jason Constantine explained the reason why the team wanted to keep the sequel a secret:
“We live in an age where it’s harder and harder for a movie to be a genuine surprise for an audience, because of the internet, because of Twitter, because of all the discussions that can happen online. Sometimes, you want to embrace that for a movie, but we really felt, on this film, that it would be great if audiences could be genuinely surprised.”
Wingard partnered with longtime collaborator and writer Simon Barrett who stated, “[With] V/H/SV/H/S 2, and especially You’re Next, we wouldn’t even tell people that those movies existed until their premieres were announced. That was our way to make that a cool thing. In this era of social media, and of everyone hyping everything, we’ve always felt that is the right approach: give people less, don’t tell them exactly what it is, let them be surprised.” They received approval from the original team behind the Blair Witch Project, developed the script, and produced the movie with secrecy extending to even the crew and Lionsgate executives. Actor James Allen McCune will be playing the brother of Heather Donohue, a character from the first film. Watch the updated trailer below and catch Blair Witch in theaters Sept. 16.

'Kong: Skull Island's' Comic-Con Trailer Shows Us the New Meaning of Man vs Beast

Comic-Con just can’t stop it with the hits today as we now get the new trailer for the highly-anticipated Kong: Skull Island movie. The film actually comes from the producers of the recent Godzilla remake, and from the looks of this new teaser is surely making the future battle between the popular Japanese monster and The Eight Wonder of the World very promising. In this clip we get to see a group of military personnel and explorers making their way to a mysterious island in the Pacific. Little do they know, this is actually where the mythical creature Kong actually resides and upon discovery, hell starts to breaks loose.
The movie is made up of a star-studded cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman to name a few. Watch the trailer above and sound off in the comments if you think Kong: Skull Islandwill be a blockbuster hit.
The film is expected to drop on March 10, 2017.

The First Official ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Teaser Is Here

Following the news that the seventh season of HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones, will arrive a little bit later than expected, a two-minute teaser clip has surprisingly dropped out of nowhere. The behind-the-scenes short shares impressions from the production of season 7, showing footage of various props and sets from the series while ominous season 6 dialogue is played over it. One interesting detail is the painting of multiple eye stones, which are traditionally used to cover the eyes of Westerosi nobles shortly after their death. Sure, it might not be a lot at this point, but we’ll take what we can get. Watch it above.

Rihanna Joins the Cast of 'Bates Motel' Season 5

A&E's version of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 horror classic, Psycho, has really resonated with audiences. Bates Motel is about to enter its fifth and final season and although it was previously announced that the character of Marion Crane would appear, we didn't know who would possibly be cast. We now have confirmation that Grammy-winning pop singer, Rihanna, has been cast in Janet Leigh's famous role.

This news hit during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC) and Bates Motel executive producers, Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin, had this to say regarding the Rihanna's casting:
“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”

This isn't Rihanna's first time on the job as an actress. She made her big screen debut in the 2012 action film, Battleship, and has since appeared in Annie and the 2015 animated film, Home. She's also appeared in several of her own music related videos and short films and is set to appear in the 2017 Luc Besson film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Comic-Con: Full trailer for The Lego Batman Movie

Though it showed at the same Comic-Con panel as some of the live-action Warner Bros/DC movies, the new trailer for The Lego Batman Movie took a little longer to hit the internet. But it's here now, so take a look...
The new film will find the Caped Crusader facing off against The Joker (Zach Galifianakis), who considers himself well-placed to be Batman's big nemesis, much to the Dark Knight's displeasure and disagreement.
And that's just one thing annoying Batman (Will Arnett). There's also Robin (Michael Cera), who he mistakenly adopted at a charity event and is now being forced to raise as his ward. The new promo goes big on Robin choosing his outfit – turns out Batman has a LOT of suit options – and the struggle between Batman wanting to do his thing and trusty butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) demanding he live up to his responsibilities. Oh, and a good joke about seat belts.
This one continues to look like a whole lot of fun, and will find its way to UK cinemas on February 10 next year.

Comic-Con: First King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword trailer

In amongst the superheroes, giant beasts and wizards, there was a legend. Specifically, King Arthur. Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, which put out a poster yesterday, brought a trailer to the San Diego Comic-Con. Check it out below.
Charlie Hunnam stars as the title character, in the time before he got the "king" part. Raised on the streets after his royal family was essentially slaughtered by his evil uncle (Jude Law), Arthur appears at first to have no particular yen for a heroic destiny. But then comes the bit with the sword and the stone and... Well, we'll see.
Ritchie's style is more evident here – unreliable narrators, streetwise heroes and plenty of fighting – which seems of a piece with hisSherlock Holmes films. Of course, the setting also offers the chance to have some magic and fantasy added in.
We'll see whether the combo works when the film finally arrives next March.

Comic-Con: Justice League footage hits

As Warner Bros. big DC movies panel rolled on, it was the turn of Zack Snyder and Justice League. And the first footage from that one has also arrived. Take a look...
Though the film is still shooting, Snyder brought a look – that can't quite be described as a trailer – at Ben Affleck's Batman gathering the team he needs to battle evil. We see him recruit Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Ezra Miller's Barry Allen/The Flash in particular, though there are also shots of Ray Fisher as Victor Stone, AKA Cyborg on board. Oh, and of course Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, who is already willing and able to do battle.
The take-away from this initial look? A definite humour boost (Ezra Miller will still need to prove himself after the debut of the TV Flash, but there's definite signs of some laughs to be found) and a fairly standard Aquaman joke. Snyder has something to prove after the dour Dawn Of Justice, so we'll have to wait and see.
As if yet there's no sign of J.K. Simmons' Commissioner Gordon, Amber Herd's Mera or anyone else, but we'll take this for now. It certainly makes a splash. SPLASH. AQUAMAN. Because... Oh, never mind.
Justice League is scheduled to arrive on November 17 next year.

Comic-Con: Doctor Strange conjures up a second trailer

Marvel brought several movies to Comic-Con this year. And Doctor Strange, the nearest to release, had the most to show off, including footage. The second trailer for the film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, is now online.
You may well know the drill by now, but if you don't... The story introduces us to talented, arrogant New York surgeon Stephen Strange's world is rocked when he's badly hurt in a car accident. Looking to help regain his skills, he turns to an unusual mystic and healer known as The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Chiwetel Ejiofor is fellow mystic arts user (and potential future rival) Baron Mordo, while Rachel McAdams as another New York-based medic who serves as Strange’s main connection back to humanity. And then there's Mads Mikkelsen as the villain, who has his own plan for the powers.
The new trailer has a lot more of the trippy visuals that Marvel showed off at the con panel this year – reality bending, blending, melting and collapsing.
Doctor Strange will hit UK cinemas on October 28 before arriving in the US on November 4.

Disney Announces Wreck It Ralph 2

Walt Disney Animation has announced that Wreck It Ralph 2 will be hitting cinemas on 9 March, 2018. Star John C. Reilly will return to voice the lead character and Sarah Silverman will once again take the role of the Vanellope von Schweetz.
"From the moment we started working on the first Wreck-It Ralph, we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters," said Rich Moore (Zootopia, The Simpsons), who will co-direct the film alongside Phil Johnston. "This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again."
The original Wreck It Ralph brought in over $470 million worldwide for the studio and received pretty strong reviews from critics, so rumours of a sequel have been floating around for a while now. Rich Moore also shared that Disney has been in talks with Nintendo to allow some of their signature characters to make an appearance in the sequel. No doubt more news on that will be unveiled in the coming months.

Game Of Thrones: how the Battle Of The Bastards was made [VIDEO]

A look behind the scenes of Game Of Thrones season 6 at what went into creating its biggest, most impressive battle yet. Spoilers…

A 25-day shoot, 500 extras, 70 horses, 4 camera crews, a budget rumoured to be in excess of $10 million. That’s what it took to make Game Of Thrones’ Battle of the Bastards.
The figures though, only tell half the story. It takes more than cash and resources to create satisfying, character-driven action on that scale. You also need expertise, experience and the following...

Trust in your director

When Battle Of The Bastards director Miguel Sapochnik emailed the Game Of Thrones producers to suggest going ‘off-book’ for three days to shoot a non-scripted episode sequence, he fully expected to be told where to go. “Dan and David like their scripts executed the way they wrote them, and with good reason” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Sapochnik’s teams had been unable to complete the originally scripted scenes due to a three-day downpour that turned the Northern Irish location of Saintfield in which the battle was filmed into “a bog nine inches deep with mud”. So, at the risk of inviting the showrunners’ ire, Sapochnik suggested a more achievable alternative.
Their response? “They said it sucked not to be able to finish as scripted but they also understood the crunch we were in and they trusted me and to have at it.”
The resulting sequence in which Kit Harington’s Jon Snow is almost trampled underfoot by a stampede of his fellow fighters, became one of the battle’s most memorable moments. It’s also one of Sapochnik’s favourites: “No VFX, no fighting, just Kit giving a stellar performance and a crazy top shot as he pushes his way back out (we affectionately called it the “rebirthing” shot).”

Actors who are geeky about their own show

Here, Kit Harington draws a comparison between Jon's “rebirthing” in the Wildling crush and another character’s scene from a 2013 episode. “That moment of when [Jon] comes up and he gasps for breath, reborn again in a way, I found weirdly reflective of the moment of Dany being held aloft at the end of season three.”
Think back to the end of season three’s Mhysa, and he’s right, the similarity is there. It’s a relevant observation for fans sold on the idea that Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, respectively representing the ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ that gives George R.R. Martin’s novel series its name, are two characters with entwined fates.

Seamless VFX

"You've got things happening that you can't shoot in any real way," says VFX producer Steve Kullback of the episode. A giant punching out a horse, for one.
Without the digital replication, animation and compositing skills of Game Of Thrones' vast VFX team, the battle as we saw it obviously wouldn't exist. "We had a lot of cavalry, a lot of infantry, Wun-Wun the giant is involved..." explains VFX Supervisor Joe Bauer in this video, "most of it would be photographed but it also needed a lot of digital enhancement."

The confidence to send 40 horses charging at your star

With over 70 horses and riders Battle Of The Bastards has the largest equestrian requirement ever in an episode of Game Of Thrones, but the real work came in making the horse action scenes feel real while protecting the animals.
Unlike the historical pitch field battle scenes Sapochnik watched in preparation for the episode (Akira Kurosawa’s 1985 epic Ran was his major reference point), the cavalry charge had to look the part without harming the horses.
“Back in the day” he told EW “you’d see these huge aerial shots of horse charges and there were two big differences. First, it was all real — no CGI or digital replication. And second, often when the horses would go down, you can kind of tell they got really hurt. Nowadays you’d never get away with that, and nor would you want to.”
The solution, explains Game Of Thrones horse mistress Camilla Naprous, was for the horses to pass through two-foot channels and be filmed in such a way “so it looks like they’re clashing but they’re not.” When the horses are filmed being knocked to the ground, specialist thick falling beds are hidden from view when the footage is digitally composited into the final scene.
Not all of the horse action was achieved using VFX, however. Showrunner David Benioff describes here what is probably his favourite shot of all of season six: “When we’re behind Jon Snow and he sees that cavalry wall galloping towards him. Part of the reason that’s such a great shot is that’s all real. That’s 40 horses charging full-speed at Kit Harington”.

Solid research

In the video above, the Game Of Thrones showrunners name the Roman fight against the Carthaginians at the Battle of Cannae, the Battle of Agincourt, and the American Civil War as different historical inspirations for this episode’s clash.
Like the wall of Bolton shields that contains the Stark army until their rescuers appear, the troops of famed military tactician Hannibal encircled their Roman opponents to slaughter them. The pile of corpses that forms part of the wall trapping the Stark army was inspired by real-life accounts of American Civil War battles, explains Benioff “where the bodies are piled up so thick it actually became an obstruction on the battlefield.”
According to Sapochnik, the Bolton circle-trap was originally scripted to use horses rather than shields but was changed to make the sequence more “production-friendly”, i.e. cheaper and more manageable. The shield wall was also, he says “a way to avoid seeing horizons on the field and therefore having to dress fewer dead bodies or stage background fights so deep because we didn’t have the money.”

Attention to detail

Game Of Thrones production designer Deborah Riley’s team spent hours making sure that each of the model corpses in the wall of dead bodies was dressed correctly in the right armour, and that each of the fake dead horses was draped in the correct house sigil for the battle.
Covered in that much mud and blood and glimpsed through a flurry of action, you wouldn’t think anyone would notice, but now that anyone with the power of the freeze-frame button can highlight a careless mistake, the required preparation was done to eliminate any such risk.

A strong grasp of character

“Jon isn’t a great leader in that battle” says Kit Harington in the video above. “He can galvanise people into following him but tacticionally he loses his temper and control.” According to Harington, Jon’s major mistake in season six is “that he doesn’t listen to Sansa […] Ramsay’s weapon all the way through is antagonising people, drawing them into a trap. And Jon completely falls for it”
Dan Weiss concurs. “He doesn’t account for Ramsay’s gifts for psychological manipulation, which Sansa warns him about.”
Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay, explains his character’s thinking: “He’s thought, ‘Oh, this guy’s going to do something stupid and honourable because he’s not going to be able to control himself so I’ll shoot his brother with an arrow!’ But he’s waited until the perfect opportunity so that Jon Snow is within archers’ range, which will make his army run forward and then bring them all into the perfect position where they can all be slaughtered.”
“It was actually a very good plan, I thought!” said Rheon. “He even had a plan for the giant, Wun-Wun, massive long pikes to poke him down. But unfortunately the riders came in and ruined the party for Ramsay.” After which point, “he kind of knows he’s buggered”.
“We were toying with that idea of Hitler in his bunker in the last days” Rheon goes on to explain, “and how you start losing sight of the actual reality because you’ve gone too far into it. Even when Jon Snow is beating the shit out of him, he’s just smiling and going ‘This is great’.”
That beating from Jon Snow was another key character moment in the episode. According to Sapochnik here, it took an entire day to film (during which time two of Harington’s punches accidentally landed on Rheon's jaw): “Ten hours with Kit on top of Iwan, beating him. I just shot it from every single angle I possibly could. The only direction I gave to Kit is that he’s not human anymore, he doesn’t feel any sympathy, empathy for this guy.”
Harington explains his take on the scene: “It’s a horrible moment when you see your hero go a bit too far. The audience is going ‘yes! Ramsay’s getting what he deserves. He’s still getting what he deserves. Okay. Stop. Could you stop now? You go from hating the person that’s being punched and then something should slightly turn into ‘this is my hero becoming a monster’.”

A desire not to repeat yourself

“We’ve had a number of night-time battles, we’d had a number of sieges, but this is the first large pitched battle” says David Benioff. “It was something different for us”.
Unlike season five’s battle-heavy episode Hardhome, which Dan Weiss describes as “basically a massacre”, this was “the story of a battle. We had never done that before.”
Weiss continues "From the beginning we knew that one thing we'd never had on the show was a true medieval pitched battle where two sides bring all the forces they can into play in some battlefield that's somehow negotiated or agreed upon and they go at each other until one of them wins and the other one loses”.
With that one ticked off, what's next on the Game Of Thrones to-do list?
